Still no styles for the calendar

Man, I have SO little time. Today I was supposed to leave work early to join Claire at her midwife appointment. I had every intention of going. I had it in my PDA and I had told everyone at the office I’d be out at the end of the afternoon. Unfortunately, I assumed Claire was going to call me at some point to confirm our departure time so we could go there together. A half hour before the appointment, I called her cell, and she was already half way there. By her reckoning, she was going to be late as it was, so there was no point in my fighting downtown traffic and parking to get there just as the appointment was ending. Apparently she tried phoning me earlier, but I was in meetings.

D’oh! Bad husband.

So I figured I’d tie up some loose ends at work with my newfound time, and found myself putting out fires until almost 8pm. Claire wasn’t talking to me when I got home.

Ack.

Meanwhile, Beta had managed to run through burrs for the second time since I shaved her on the weekend so she and I had to spend some more quality time with the clipper. After vacuuming the resulting fluff, I went to the kitchen to do dishwashing duty. By this time Claire had gone to bed.

So why, might you ask, am I spending my valuable time posting to my blog?

Well, while waiting for Beta to do her nightly business in the yard, I have to do something productive. Besides, I feel inspired.

Claire’s reading this book called Hominids that’s an cool-sounding science fiction book that’s set in my home town. I really want to read it too, but first…

I have to finish Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series. Damn, those are thick books. And I’m a slow reader. I hate not finishing what I start, so I haven’t read any other fiction in about a year and a half. I feel like I can’t afford to split my focus, lest I lose track of the zillions of characters and plotlines, or worse, lose interest. People have told me to drop it, but I can’t, I just can’t. I’m on book ten, now, about a third of the way in. If I can finish this before the new prequel comes out on paperback, I may read Hominids.

(Yikes. Writing this made me realize I’m using the promise of reading another book as my motivation for finishing this series. I must be ill.)

Beta’s back inside now and staring at me intently, occasionally voicing cute little whiny noises. I haven’t figured out exactly what she’s trying to tell me yet, but it’s probably something like “Go join Claire in bed, dumbass.”
